Supervisors approve policies governing employee pay

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a set of policies Monday designed to "make it clear that the board controls how it chooses to fund constitutional office employees with local funding over and above the minimum required by the commonwealth."

A position statement in the document says that any time a position is vacated, the board of supervisors will determine whether the job can be performed by existing employees or reduced to part-time. Five policies are then outlined, as follows:

1. The county won’t provide salary supplements to constitutional officers;

2. The board may provide two classifications for supplements for employees in constitutional offices: "law enforcement/dispatch retention" and "general."
