Supervisors approve hardship request

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a conditional use permit for a Cardinal resident. The decision followed a joint public hearing held last week with the Mathews County Planning Commission.

Larry Wilson had requested the CUP in order to allow him to continue living in a travel- trailer on his property. His home was destroyed by Hurricane Isabel, and financial hardships have delayed his ability to rebuild. He has no other place to live.

Mathews Planning and Zoning received a complaint about the situation and, during a visit to the site, found the travel-trailer to be in violation of the zoning ordinance. Staff recommended that Wilson apply for the CUP to give him time to correct the situation.

The Mathews County Health Department required that Wilson obtain a properly enclosed sewage container for the trailer and that he either take the waste water being discharged to a dump station or dump it in the existing septic tank. Planner Thomas Jenkins said that Wils...
