Extension agent Glenn Sturm from the Gloucester office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service spoke to more than two dozen retired educators at the June 26 luncheon meeting of the Gloucester Retired Educators Association, held at the DAV building in Gloucester.
Sturm provided information about osteoporosis. Developing osteoporosis means having weakened and brittle bones which may increase the risk of bone fractures, back pain and stooped posture.
There are uncontrollable risk factors such as older age, family history, medical conditions, and controllable risk factors such as inadequate calcium, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use, Sturm said. Calcium is vital for many body functions and the amount needed is dependent upon gender and age. The best source of calcium is found in low-fat or non-fat dairy products.
