Student dig Saturday at Historic Christ Church

The Foundation for Historic Christ Church invites area students to participate in an archaeological dig this Saturday at Historic Christ Church at 420 Christ Church Road, Weems.

The excavations are part of a preservation project to capture and divert stormwater from the church, which was completed in 1735 and is Lancaster County’s only National Historic Landmark.

Students from elementary to high school can sign up for a two-hour shift at one of the following times: 9 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or 1 to 3 p.m. Students will help archaeologists dig around Christ Church and screen for artifacts. They will work under the supervision of professional archaeologists with DATA Investigations of Gloucester.

The excavations at the historic site thus far have uncovered Native American ceramics, locally-made and imported tobacco pipe stems and bowls, architectural fragments from the church building and original churchyard wall, and domestic items such as fragments of stoneware drinkin...
