Structure fire

A charred skeleton is all that remains of this home on Eagle Road at Hayes. The fire, which firefighters said is considered suspicious in nature, was called in around 11:15 p.m. Monday. According to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad spokesperson Robert Parlett, the structure was unoccupied, but was loaded with clothing and other material, which helped to fuel the fire. The structure was well involved in fire when first responders arrived on scene. Parlett said AVFRS responded with three engines, two rescue trucks, a medic unit and a tanker. Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., gave mutual aid with one engine and a tanker. About 25 firefighters responded to the blaze. Parlett said firefighters have been called out to the scene multiple times since the initial blaze to check on smoldering material. The Virginia State Police were called to the scene to conduct an arson investigation, he said. Photo by Quinton Sheppard ...
