Structure fire

The Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad was alerted by a passerby around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday of flames coming from a building at the 3700 block of George Washington Memorial Highway at Ordinary. AVFRS spokesperson Robert Parlett said first arriving units encountered a two-story, unoccupied home fully involved in fire approximately 300 feet off the highway. The fire and use of a nearby fire hydrant caused Route 17 to be closed for much of the time firefighters were on the scene. Because of the damage, Parlett said firefighters were not able to access the interior of the entire structure for a search. However, no injuries were reported on scene. Members of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., responded with mutual aid. Assistance was also provided by the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office, which shut down the road and prevented damage to the hose running across the road. ...
