Structure fire

Abingdon firefighters, above, overhaul a scene following a structure fire that took place last Thursday morning in a home off Guinea Road. According to Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc., spokesperson Robert Parlett, no one was home inside the two-story garage apartment at the time of the blaze. He said the fire was contained to the room of origin, but smoke and heat filled the entire upper floor. Unfortunately, some pets in the home succumbed to the smoke and fire. He said medic crews attempted to revive the pets for quite a while but were unsuccessful. The cause and origin of the blaze are under investigation. Parlett said Gloucester County deputies and dispatchers, as well as mutual aid response from Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad and a quick response from Dominion Energy each played a major role in getting the fire under control quickly.
