Structure fire

The Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad responded to a structure fire on Sarah Creek Lane, Gloucester Point, on the morning of Thursday, June 23. The call was dispatched at 8:15, according to AVFRS spokesperson Robert Parlett, and took place in the middle of a severe thunderstorm. He said the rain was coming down so hard that it may have helped suppress the fire. When the first engine arrived, the siding and sheathing was pulled from the affected area and the fire was extinguished, he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to have been from a lightning strike, Parlett said. AVFRS responded with an engine, a rescue, a medic unit and 10 volunteers.
