Strength in Numbers:Lunch-pail approach helps GHS wrestlers succeed

The culture around Dukes’ wrestling is changing. 

Interim Gloucester High School head coach John Glockner has a team composed mostly of underclassmen that underwent a coaching change during the first week of the season. On paper, that is a recipe for a rebuilding year. But instead of rebuilding, the Dukes have reloaded.

The team sent 10 wrestlers to the sectional tournament this past weekend and all 10 qualified for regionals. They will face Green Run High School on Saturday for the opportunity to come out on top and advance to the 5A State Championships.

The team put together a regular season record of 5-3 in the Peninsula District, though Glockner firmly believes that his team could have gone undefeated with a full roster.

The team lacks middleweights, meaning that they must forfeit matches where they can’t field a wrestler. Without this gap, it is very possible that Gloucester wrestling would have finished the year with a zero in the loss column.
