Store closing marks end of 44-year furniture career for Jean South

Roberts Furniture and Mattress will close its store at Edgehill Town Center, Gloucester, on Saturday. A liquidation sale is underway.

Owner Jay Roberts said he is closing the store because the center is taking on more of a medical focus. However, Roberts said he is considering opening another store in Gloucester in the future, preferably one along the busy Route 17 corridor.

Roberts continues to operate Roberts Furniture and Mattress stores in Hampton, Newport News, Winchester and Williamsburg, plus two Oops Clearance stores in Newport News and Hampton, and a Red Barn Furniture Outlet near Tappahannock.

Saturday will end a 44-year furniture career for Jean South of Woods Cross Roads. South began working at Broaddus and Hall, owned by Willie Broaddus and James Ellis Hall, in 1970.
