A case of mistaken identity resulted in a boat being reported stolen in Mathews last week.

After witnesses reported seeing a boat taken from a home in the 8400 block of Buckley Hall Road between 12:30 and 2 p.m. last Thursday, the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release requesting information, along with screen shots from a surveillance video showing a white pickup truck towing the trailered boat away.

However, on Monday, the sheriff’s office issued a second press release explaining that another boat in the area had been designated for donation, but the wrong boat had been taken.

The incident was a misunderstanding, said the press release, and arrangements have been made for the boat to be returned. The sheriff’s office said that no charges will be filed in the matter.
