Mathews Treasurer Wendy Stewart, 52, of North, has announced her intent to once again run for the office in the Nov. 7 election. She is running unopposed, as an independent.
Stewart said the treasurer’s office has had “a lot of ups and downs” in the past several years with the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial hardship it brought with it.
“Our citizens have had to endure a lot financially and personally,” she said. “I always try to be mindful of each person’s situation and treat them with courtesy and integrity. It is always my goal to continue to provide services with transparency and accountability.”
A Mathews native and lifelong resident of the county, Stewart graduated from Mathews High School and continued her education with Alpha Omega Real Estate School before becoming a licensed real estate agent.
In 2005, Stewart went to work in the Mathews Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office, and a year later transferred to the treasurer’s office as a deputy treasurer. She took classes through the University of Virginia to become a certified deputy treasurer. In 2007, she was elected as treasurer and has served for 15 years, continuing her education to become a Master Governmental Treasurer.
“It is very important to keep up with the continuously changing laws and technology,” said Stewart, “so myself and employees participate in the certification program to be able to provide the best services possible to our citizens.”
Stewart said she wouldn’t be able to do what she does without the support of her staff, and she said she looks forward to continuing to serve Mathews residents “to the best of my ability.”
She and her husband Ricky have two sons, Shane and Ryan. Ryan and his wife Savannah have one son, Henry.
