Stephen Field on the road to recovery following transplant

When his mother died at the age of only 46 from liver disease, the farthest thing from Stephen Field’s mind was that he would suffer from the same disease and come extremely close to losing his own life from it.

A liver transplant later and facing mounting medical bills, Field is on his way to recovery and is grateful that he experienced a series of what he referred to as miracles that ultimately saved his life.

A special fundraiser to help the family is scheduled for Sunday at their church, Singleton United Methodist in Schley.

Field, a lifelong Gloucester resident, said his issues started out nearly a decade ago with irritable bowel symptoms. When undergoing routine blood work, Field’s doctor noticed his liver enzymes were high, and couldn’t figure out exactly why. “They ended up taking my gallbladder out and tried some other different things, but they didn’t work,” he said.
