Owen S. Lanier, executive director of the Steamboat Era Museum in Irvington, will be the guest speaker at the Monday meeting of the Gloucester Genealogical Society of Virginia. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. in the community room of Gloucester County Main Library, and is open to the public. Lanier’s program is titled, “Steamboats of the Gloucester Area—Their Stops and Their Services.” From the late 19th century through the first quarter of the 20th center, steamboats were the preferred mode of transportation of people and merchandise between county wharves and cities from Norfolk to Baltimore, a release said. They faded then disappeared with modern hard-surfaced roads and development of the truck.
