State superintendent visits

Dr. James F. Lane, Virginia’s superintendent of public instruction, paid a visit to Mathews County Public Schools last Thursday. Lane, at left, is shown here listening to Thomas Hunter Middle School’s guidance counselor Denise McCuistion, who spoke about the challenges she faces with student mental health issues caused by their isolation during COVID-19. Also shown are Dr. David Myers, assistant state superintendent, Department of Data, Research and Technology and Mathews County’s superintendent Nancy Welch. Dr. Lane is in the process of visiting every school division in Virginia. He had originally scheduled his visit last March; that visit was canceled as on that day he announced the closing of in-person classes for all Virginia schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year due to the pandemic.
