State officials oversee local broadband projects

Representatives from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development visited Gloucester and Mathews counties on Friday to see how two grant-funded broadband projects are coming along.

Judy Rowe, chair of the Mathews Broadband Advisory Board, said that DHCD’s Program Manager Tammy Breski and Telecommunications and Broadband Project Manager Caroline Luxhoj spent two hours in each county, talking with representatives of Breezeline and Open Broadband, the companies building the projects, as well as with local broadband board and staff members who have been overseeing the projects for the counties involved.

The Breezeline project is bringing expanded fiber broadband services to Mathews, Middlesex, Caroline and Lancaster counties, while the Open Broadband project is fulfilling a similar role, except with wireless service, in Gloucester and Mathews.
