State champs Gloucester 12U All-Stars finish second in region

After claiming the state title earlier this month, the Gloucester Youth Baseball 12-year-old Major 60 team ended its run on Saturday morning, placing second in the Babe Ruth League Southeast Region Tournament, held July 13-16 in Glen Allen.

The Gloucester 12U All-Stars made it all the way to the championship game before falling to Palm Beach Gardens. The Florida team will advance to the Babe Ruth World Series on Aug. 6-13 in Ocala, Florida.

Gloucester won its first two games, shutting out Southwest Blue (North Carolina), 7-0, and beating Glen Allen, 4-1. Gloucester then faced Palm Beach Gardens on Friday morning, falling 12-2.

With the loss, Gloucester dropped to the losers’ bracket and had to work its way back by beating the host Glen Allen squad, 13-2, on Friday afternoon.

That set up a second showdown with the undefeated squad from Palm Beach Gardens on Saturday morning. Gloucester would have had to beat the Florida squad twice to win the double elimination tournament, but...
