State champions

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis doubles duo of Ashley Hudgins and Morgan Johnson earned the title of Group 1A state champions on Friday after wins over doubles teams from Parry McCluer and Radford. The Mathews girls compiled a 16-2 record this season. Overall, playing together as sophomores, juniors and seniors, the girls had 41 wins and only four losses. Shown after the win are, from left, assistant coaches Mark Brown and Chandler Rogers, Hudgins, Johnson and head coach LaDonna Crain.
