Mathews High School’s track team won the state championship in 1970. Members who took first-place awards included, seated from left, Linwood Blake and Charles Clark of the 880 relay and Kerry Smith of the mile relay; back row, Roy Spriggs and George Matthews, 880 relay; Robert Diggs, Jimmy Mitchem and James Mason, mile relay; and coach Steven Lewis. Mitchem also was first in the 440 and Diggs was first in the 880.
