State champions

Family and Consumer Science students at Thomas Hunter Middle School in Mathews won first place in a statewide competition for gingerbread houses. Teacher Michelle Williams said the classes made 17 houses and, after a student vote, four were submitted to the statewide Family, Career and Community Leaders of America competition, which attracted more than 250 entries from 30+ FCCLA chapters. The winning entry, at left, was decorated by seventh graders Alexandra Walker and Emily Ward, eighth grader Ashton O’Leary and, not pictured, seventh grader Brianna Thomas.
