Mathews Farmers’ Market opened Saturday for the 2023 season, without the familiar face of Stan Cath, a weekly vendor for years who died in February. Shown here in 2017, Cath began his weekly appearance at the market selling handcrafted items as a way to get rid of invasive bamboo in his yard. Fellow market veteran Rosalie Brown said that the market will honor his memory by calling the market’s annual April opening “Stan Day.” The market opened one week late this year due to bad weather on Saturday, April 1.
