Spruill catches largest spadefish in 2025

Kyle Spruill of Gloucester, caught the largest spadefish registered for a citation in the 2025 Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament. Spruill caught his 13-pound, 3-ounce fish, which was 29 inches long, on June 4 while fishing at Chesapeake Light Tower. The minimum weight for a citation is 8 pounds, and 33 spadefish qualified for citations during the year, according to the Dec. 31 wrap-up from the tournament. Local waters produced a state-leading speckled trout, when Ryan Conway of Lancaster hauled in a 10-pound, 10-ounce specimen on May 3. The fish was 31.5 inches long. Citation minimum for the species is 5 pounds. One fish catch set a state record: a 5-pound, 14-ounce pompano caught by Scott Patey of Delmar, Delaware. Citations Sheepshead weighing 10 pounds or more accounted for 27 percent of citations for fish caught and kept in the annual tournament.
