Spring Hill Baptist celebrates 145th anniversary

Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, has been a landmark in Mathews since 1874 when it was organized from mother church, Mathews Baptist at Hudgins.

The church will celebrate 145 years of continued ministry at Cobbs Creek with a homecoming at 11 a.m. Sunday. Lunch will be served after the service.

In the afternoon, the church choir will present the cantata, “This Is My Country,” under the direction of Sue B. Smith. Guest organist will be Susan Travers, great-granddaughter of William E. and Victoria Sadler (one of the early members).

Church history

Spring Hill Baptist held its first meeting in a school building which was actually a singing school. In 1877, the land on which the church now stands was purchased for $1 and building the new church began.

During the years 1903-1917, the church’s wooden shingles were replaced with asbestos shingles, the building was extended 10 feet and new benches installed.
