Sport fishermen not having much luck this summer

Tough is an understatement when it comes to describing anglers’ success when casting their lines into local waters this summer.

Local charter owners and bait and tackle shops are reporting few citation catches and difficult fishing overall, but some say there may be light appearing at the end of the tunnel.

Capt. Ed Lawrence, owner of Speckulater Charters, Gloucester, said the past two weeks have been a real mixed bag. “It’s been pick a fish here and pick a fish there,” Lawrence said.

The hot weather in early July slowed the fish and the fishermen down, Lawrence said, “but the storm cooled the water off and improved the attitude of both the fish and the fishermen.”

He reported seeing some nice schools of redfish, mainly in waters in and around the Mobjack Bay.
