’Tis the season to spoil our pets! Let’s be honest: all of our four-legged friends are on Santa’s nice list and deserve some extra love this year. Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society is home to many incredible adoptable pets who will bark and meow with excitement over special treats this season. There are several ways you can help a homeless pet feel holly and jolly!
You can select an ornament from our Angel Tree! The GMHS Angel Tree has returned and is located in the shelter’s lobby (6620 Jackson Lane, south of Gloucester Court House). It is accessible during normal operating hours, Tuesday-Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Every ornament features a pet in the care of GMHS. Each one would love a special toy or treat to make the holidays merry and bright while they wait for adoption in their forever home. If you can’t make it by the shelter, you can find our Amazon and Chewy wish lists on our website and have gifts shipped right to our front door.
You can foster a dog! Home Fur the Howlidays is a chance to foster a shelter dog for short-term or long-term during the holiday season so they, too, can celebrate outside of the shelter. Fostering a shelter dog decreases their stress levels and it helps us learn more about them, which helps them find their forever homes. If you’re interested in helping any of our dogs, please fill out the foster application on our website.
Every day at GMHS, homeless pets live because you give. Saving lives is expensive, and there is no shortage of pets in need of our care. Each gift made—tax-deductible, of course—has life-saving power, and we appreciate your commitment to saving and transforming the lives of homeless pets. Donations can be made on the web at gmhumanesociety.org/donate or by mail at P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061. With an 8 percent administrative rate, 92 cents of every donated dollar goes directly to providing shelter and care for these homeless residents.
Thank you for choosing to think of our homeless pets this holiday season. Thank you to everyone—adopters, donors, volunteers, and team members—who made 2024 a wonderful year for the homeless pets of our community and our shelter! We are grateful for your support and friendship. It is with great hope that we look forward to the coming year and all the promise it holds. The future is bright, and together we will save even more lives.
