“We are fortunate to live where we can watch herons and egrets stalk their meals in Timberneck Creek,” said Gloucester resident Larry Sherertz, who took this unique photo. While the birds grab minnows, shrimp and small crabs frequently, “this heron has a new trick up his feathers—he ‘spearfishes,’” Sherertz said. “We’ve seen this once before when a large crab was the meal. This Atlantic menhaden was on the menu today.”
