Did you know that February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month? Spay/Neuter Awareness Month was established to address the issue of pet overpopulation and reduce the number of homeless animals. Spay and neuter is win-win-win. The individual animals win because they live longer, healthier, happier lives. The owners win because they are doing the best thing for their beloved pet. And our community wins because we no longer have unwanted animals abandoned and filling our shelters. There is no better way to show your pets love than by having them fixed!
Since January of 2018, Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society has owned and operated Fixin’ to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic in Gloucester. The clinic offers low and no cost veterinarian-performed sterilization surgeries for healthy cats and dogs. In 2024 alone, Fixin’ to Save altered 4,541 pets—record-breaking year. That’s an increase of 364 surgeries since 2023! These pets include shelter and rescue animals, public pets, and community cats.
“Getting your pet spayed or neutered is essential for reducing pet overpopulation. At Fixin’ to Save Spay & Neuter Clinic, we aim to make sterilization procedures accessible to a wide range of pet owners, including those with limited financial resources,” said Clinic Director Cassandra Six. “Spaying and neutering your pet not only helps control the pet population but also offers many health benefits. These procedures can prevent reproductive cancers and infections, reduce the risk of serious diseases, and improve your pet’s behavior, making them less likely to roam, fight, or urinate inappropriately.”
Our community should be proud of the number of lives saved in 2024 through its support of spay/neuter, yet more work remains to be done. 2025 brings great promise as Fixin’ to Save seeks to continue to increase the number of surgeries, reduce wait times, and continue to offer outstanding customer service to all clients and their pets.
The mission of Fixin’ to Save Spay and Neuter Clinic is to provide high quality, affordable spay/neuter services, saving lives, one surgery at a time. Located in the White Marsh Shopping Center, the clinic performs surgeries by appointment only.
