Sparks fly during Mathews candidate forum

Sparks flew between two candidates Monday night during a candidate forum held at the Piankatank Ruritan Club in Hudgins.

As he did during an Oct. 1 forum on Gwynn’s Island, school board candidate John Priest questioned how many school board meetings county supervisors and other county officials, including the sheriff, had attended.

But unlike the prior meeting, when no one challenged his remark, on Monday Edwina Casey, running for reelection to the board of supervisors, called Priest out on the issue.

“I was not elected to the school board,” she said. “The school board is elected to handle the schools … I want to know how many sports events you’ve attended.”

Casey proceeded to list all of the sports events she regularly attends, on top of having been a softball coach for several years. She said she probably knows most of the children in the schools. Priest rebutted that he had taught at Mathews High School for 17 years and had volunteered ...
