Southwind expands dining area, kitchen

Southwind Café and Pizza in Mathews Court House has made a number of improvements in recent months.

“The new little spot gives us extra room,” owner Dean Tsamouras said. The business purchased an adjacent house and attached it to the existing restaurant, which is located in a former country store, adding a second dining room that seats about 40 diners. That has cut down on customers having to wait for a table on busy nights, Tsamouras said. The main dining room seats about 50 including about a dozen at the bar.

The new room can seat extra diners or used for meetings (such as the Mathews Library Book Club) or gatherings (several wedding rehearsal dinners have been held there).

Diners can continue to enjoy a changing menu at Southwind. Tsamouras said the restaurant offers a wide range of foods, including some dishes from his Greek heritage such as moussaka, souvlaki and baklava. The menu features pizza, seafood, steaks and soups.
