Southern States Cooperative will celebrate 90 years of service to agriculture in the Southeast on Saturday. And its Gloucester store, located on Main Street, is taking part in the fun.

Candace Lawson, bookkeeper at the Gloucester store, said Tuesday that the store will hold raffles Saturday, and offer free caps and cake. Product specials are also planned.

Established in 1923, as the Virginia Seed Service, the organization started with 150 original farmer-members meeting in Richmond, a corporate release said. That group wanted to develop a reliable supply of clover and grain seeds suited to Virginia soils.

The service changed its name to Southern States Cooperative 10 years later and grew into a multi-state agriculture supply cooperative with more than 200,000 members in 11 core states.
