South pitches two shutouts as Lady Devils advance

The Mathews High School varsity softball team is one win away from a state playoff berth.

After defeating Cumberland and William Campbell this past week, the Lady Devils were scheduled to face the Rappahannock Raiders last night in the Region 1A East semifinal game.

The winner of that game advances to Friday’s Region 1A East championship and also earns an automatic berth to the VHSL Spring Jubilee at Radford University.

Mathews defeated the Cumberland Dukes, 6-0, Friday in the Conference 42 semifinal game, which was held at Middlesex High School. Madison South threw the complete game shutout allowing five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.

Offensively, the Devils were led by Ellie Armistead who was 2-for-3 with two singles, a walk, two runs scored. Casey Dalton was 1-for-1 with a single and two walks.
