Sophia Deal Hogge, 87, of Achilles, passed away Jan. 27, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Sophia was born Dec. 24, 1930, a twin daughter of the late Braxton and Pearl Jenkins Deal, and is also preceded in death by her twin sister, Sylvia Battisto.
Sophia was a graduate of Achilles High School, and a lifelong member of Union Baptist Church. She took great pride in her flower gardens. It takes patience and perseverance and a love for living things to grow into a beautiful flower. She enjoyed the beauty and satisfaction in seeing the result of her labor.
Sophia loved her family and nothing was more important than the love and nurture she gave to her family. She always kept the faith. She was such a blessing to us and leaves a legacy of focusing on what is truly important, not only when life is easy, but when it is difficult too. The love she gave to all of us will live on and be with us even now that she has gone to be with God.
She is survived by her beloved husband, William Jennings Hogge; her loving precious daughter, Kay Hogge Poythress; grandson, Ray Hogge and wife Karen; a great-granddaughter, Lilly, who will be born in May; special niece and nephew, Debby Lockwood and Vincent Battisto Jr.; special cousin, Faye J. Deal, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at Union Baptist Church. The Rev. Richard Whiteheart and the Rev. Dr. Rodney Autry conducted. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
