Solar farm wins approval

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors paved the way Tuesday night for the area’s first utility-scale solar energy facility to be constructed off Route 14 just east of Flat Iron.

Board members unanimously approved a conditional use permit for Strata Solar to build a 20-megawatt collection facility on approximately 203 acres of land it has arranged to lease, which is currently in an agricultural district.

Strata plans to sell the electricity collected at the Route 14 project to an electric power grid. The company will erect 66,000 photovoltaic panels on 900 racks, which will rotate large metal plates to follow the sun.

A number of people spoke during Tuesday night’s public hearing in the colonial courthouse in support of the facility, while a couple of people who live adjacent to where the facility will be constructed voiced strong opposition.
