Solar facilities, event venues draw planners’ attention

The Gloucester County Planning Commission discussed whether to allow solar energy facilities as a by-right use in the RC-1 (Rural Countryside) zoning district during a meeting Thursday night in the colonial courthouse.

Planner Tripp Little said the commission is favoring by-right use, but asked staff to bring back some additional information at its Aug. 3 meeting.

Decommissioning and sureties will be reviewed, Little said, and staff will provide more information about what happens when a solar facility is no longer in use. In addition, commission members had questions about flexibility of buffer requirements for such facilities and these will be addressed by planning staff.

Staff has suggested that solar facilities might be categorized based on electrical output, rather than area that the facility would occupy.

On a separate matter, the commission discussed a proposed code amendment for event venues. No vote was taken on the matter.
