Smooth openings reported in Gloucester, Mathews schools

School days are here again. Classes resumed across the commonwealth on Monday, including Gloucester and Mathews, and superintendents from the two counties report that the first day back for the start of the 2025-2026 school year went well.

Superintendent of Gloucester County Public Schools Dr. Anthony Vladu reported a smooth opening day with a total of 4,739 students in attendance.
“These are actual students who showed up,” said Vladu. “Our number may be higher.”
The district will have a more accurate picture of enrollment after the first 10 days of school.
As for transportation, the first day with students on buses went extremely smooth.
“We had almost a perfect day,” said Vladu. “Everybody got home safely.”
There were a couple of transportation hiccups the second day, but everyone arrived at school and back home again safely.
