Smith accepts offer to pitch for Winthrop University

Mackenzie Smith, a rising senior at Gloucester High School, has announced she has accepted an offer to pitch for Division I Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. 

The Eagles play in the Big South Conference and are coached by Wendy Thees. The Eagles just missed earning a trip to the 2019 NCAA regionals as they came up short in the conference championship game, losing 3-2 to the Longwood Lancers.

During her just-ended junior year, Smith had an 18-3 record with an ERA of 0.54. She struck out 241 batters in 131.2 innings pitched. Smith also had an opponents’ batting average of .081. 

Smith was named to the first team all-Peninsula District and to the first team all-5A region, along with being named Peninsula District Pitcher of the Year. 

Transferring to GHS from Matoaca High School in Richmond, Smith has a career record of 27-4 with the Dukes while accumulating 315 strikeouts to go along with six no-hitters and three perfect games.
