Sisters clean up Point neighborhood

Sisters Julie Shields of Gloucester, and Bonnie Parks of New Jersey, took part in a neighborhood trash collection earlier this month.

The sisters picked up litter in the Gloucester Point area, along Frederick, Margaret, Powhatan and Chapman drives, Kemp Lane and Pigeon Hill Road. The pair collected two large bags of trash and the equivalent of a 13-gallon bag of aluminum cans. They estimated that about 80 percent of the trash was alcohol-related, 15 percent fast-food related and the other 5 percent cigarette butts and other debris.

Shields is a member of Gloucester’s Clean Community’s volunteer group, the Clean Team. The Clean Team does regular cleanups around the county in the members’ spare time.

If you are interested in volunteering, call Gloucester Clean Community at 804-693-5370 or visit www.gloucesterva.info/204/Clean-Community to sign up. Supplies are provided.
