Siege of Yorktown topic of Sunday talk

Owen Lanier will speak on “Big Guns in the Tidewater: Yorktown’s 1862 Siege” at a meeting Sunday of the Gloucester Historical Society.The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 6470 Main Street, Gloucester.

Lanier, a David Wills Scholar at Gettysburg College, is also an intern with the American Battlefield Trust. He maintains a social media account, Civil War Files.

His talk on Sunday will include photographs and discussion of people and events of the 1862 siege, in which the Union march toward Richmond up the Peninsula was thwarted by Confederate maneuvers and fortifications. The meeting is open to the public.
