The Virginia Department of Transportation is getting underway major pedestrian improvements both at Gloucester Point and in Gloucester Court House.

Construction began this week on a project to build sidewalk and crosswalks along Route 17 at Gloucester Point southbound, between Lafayette Heights Drive and Bellehaven Drive.

The work is scheduled to continue through January 2021, VDOT said.

At Gloucester Court House, improvements are beginning at the north intersection of Routes 17 and 17 Business, Main Street, and between that intersection and McFadden Way across from Hospital Drive.

This work is also set to continue into January.

In other projects, a bridge replacement on Route 17 southbound over Dragon Run, at the Gloucester-Middlesex line, continues for another year.

Also, nighttime paving is set to continue this week on a number of roads in Gloucester and Mathews.
