Sibley’s renovation

Sibley’s General Store on Main Street in Mathews was elevated this week in preparation for preservation work that will include installing a new, slightly higher foundation; replacing and/or reinforcing support members; and installing drainage. Both the front section of the store, built in 1899, and the back section, built in the 1840s, were elevated. Eventually, they will be reconnected with a new hyphen that will contain handicapped accessible stairs, a kitchenette, bathroom facilities, and a mechanical room. The historic building serves as headquarters of the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center.
