Short Lane Ice Cream under new ownership

Short Lane Ice Cream Company in Gloucester is under new ownership.

Barry Childress, an automotive technology teacher at Gloucester High School, and his wife Toni Childress, principal at Mathews High School, are the new owners.

Their daughter, Beth Childress, is store manager. She has previous local restaurant experience. They all reside at Woods Cross Roads.

They were trained by Kim Williams, who ran the ice cream shop—located at the corner of Short Lane and George Washington Memorial Highway—for about 15 years, Barry said. Kim Williams owned the business with her husband, Jimmy; they reside at Ware Neck and operate Ware Neck Produce on Main Street.

Like the Williamses, the Childresses attract many of their customers with the handmade ice cream. They scoop about 30 flavors at once, with some flavors like pumpkin and candy cane being seasonal selections.
