Shopping season gets strong start in Gloucester, Mathews

Plenty of shoppers were out and about in Gloucester and Mathews during the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which brought smiles to local merchants.

A check with some residents out shopping indicated many plan to spend a bit less this year, but some said they plan to spend a little more. One Gloucester woman said that since the economy has not improved that much, she and about 30 people who had been exchanging gifts now draw one name each to give a gift.

But sales were very good at Vashti’s Jewelers, located at Edgehill Town Center, owner Nicole Michael said, buoyed by shoppers out on the traditional busy Black Friday and a good turnout on Saturday, which American Express has been promoting as Small Business Saturday.

Many items sold well, Michael said, including sterling jewelry and watches.

A short distance down Main Street, Yolanda’s had excellent sales, owner Yolanda Teschner said. Knee-high boots for women were popular, Teschner said, as were ankle boots. Liset...
