The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim in last night’s shooting in the Onemo area of the county as 61-year-old Steven Allen Eary.

At 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, dispatchers with the sheriff’s office received two separate 911 calls from the 2600 block of Ridgefield Road advising of an altercation and shots fired.

Callers reported that two victims had been shot and one was unresponsive, according to an updated release from the sheriff’s office. Deputies and medical personnel arrived on scene and located Eary suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second victim was treated for a grazed wound to the shoulder and released. A 21-year-old male suspect was identified and taken into custody for questioning. The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. ...
