SHIRLEY ANN COATES

April 16, 1952-November 14, 2024

Shirley Ann Coates, a remarkable wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on November 14, 2024.

Born on April 16, 1952 in Thomaston, Georgia, to the late Willis A. Strickland and October Joy Strickland, Shirley’s life was a testament to her strength, kindness, resilience, and creativity. As a military child, she spent her early years in Georgia, France, and Germany, and finally landed in Severn, Virginia, in her teen years.

Shirley was a devoted wife to Roy L. Coates, and for 55 years they lived a beautiful life together in Guinea. She was a nurturing mother to Teresa Rhodes, Crystal Marshall, and Beth Douglas (Scott), and was adored by six grandchildren, Anthony Rhodes, Alec Douglas, Brianna Douglas, Sabrina Marshall, John Marshall, and Tristan Marshall.

Throughout her life, Shirley embodied determination and positivity. As a stay-at-home mom, she poured love and guidance into her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, teaching them strength, resilience, and the value of hard work. Her resourcefulness inspired creative masterpieces from everyday items. She loved animals and had her own aviary for many years; she was also an avid gardener and lover of plants, many of which still grow right where she lovingly planted them.

Shirley’s life included a diverse career path which reflected her versatility: bus driver, machinist, cake decorator, and deli worker. Her passion for creativity and problem-solving shone through in every endeavor.

Preceding her in death were brothers, Johnny and Mike, and sister, Karen. Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Roy; children; grandchildren, and sisters, Brenda McQuillen, Patricia Jenkins and Barbara Fallin.

Shirley’s unwavering optimism, kindness, and generosity inspired countless lives. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Funeral services will be held at Gloucester Point Baptist Church on November 29, 2024 at 11 a.m. There will be a reception at the church immediately following the service.

May Shirley’s remarkable life and spirit be cherished forever.
