Sheriff’s Institute scholarship

Mathews High School graduate Maliya Layden, shown with Mathews Sheriff Mark Barrick, recently received a scholarship for $1,000 from the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute. After graduating from high school in 2019, Layden attended Rappahannock Community College, earning an associate’s degree in General Studies with Honors in December 2020. She has now completed her first year of studies at George Mason University, where she is seeking a bachelor’s in Criminology with a Minor in Forensic Psychology. She is the daughter of Investigator April Edwards of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.
