SHANNAH PARKS COOPER

Shannah Parks Cooper, age 84, of Gloucester Virginia, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Shannah was born on June 30, 1939 to the late John Alton and Mary Ellen Johnson Parks of Suffolk, Va. She graduated from Suffolk High School in 1957 and attended Mary Washington College. Her career started as a medical secretary and continued for several years. After staying home with her three children, she taught pre-kindergarten at Trinity Lutheran School until the family moved to Gloucester. In 1974, she worked as a secretary at Jim and Pat Carter Real Estate until she started her career as Deputy Clerk in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court system in Gloucester and York County where she retired in 2004.

Shannah was involved in numerous organizations. When she lived in Newport News, she was an active member of the Hilton Junior Woman’s Club and performed in several of the Gaslight theatre shows. When she moved to Gloucester, she became actively involved in the Ware River Circle of The King’s Daughters and Sons and the Garden Club of Gloucester and Mathews, where she was a past President and won numerous flower-arranging awards. She was a member of Ware Episcopal Church and the Ware River Yacht Club. Shannah was very involved with her family. She volunteered her time with numerous school activities and sporting events, especially Gloucester High School pep rallies. She was instrumental in launching the Gloucester High School Athletic Booster Club. She continued her support with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities which included traveling throughout the East Coast.

Shannah is survived by her husband of 62 years, John “Jack” Cooper; her three daughters, Ellen Leigh (Jim), Sherri Miller (Douglas), Susan Grizzard (Travis); nine grandchildren, Heather Conners (Richard), Timothy “TJ” White Jr. (Megan), Courtland Womble (Emily), Grayson Womble, Cooper Benzin, Triston Grizzard, Stone Grizzard, Jeff Leigh (Beth), Jason Leigh and 11 great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith, Kyrsten Smith, Benjamin White, Kaitlyn Smith, Jordan White, Annabeth White, Olivia Conners, Grant Womble, Finley Conners, Steven Leigh, and Easton Wikle. A private family burial will take place on Friday, January 26, 2024. The family welcomes you to attend her Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m. at the Abingdon Ruritan Club, 8784 Guinea Road, Hayes, Va. 23072. In memory of our loved one, contributions may be made to Gloucester Volunteer Fire & Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061, Ware Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 616, Gloucester, Va. 23061, or a charitable organization of your choice.
