Sewage plant closing near

The Hampton Roads Sanitation District is in the process of testing Mathews County’s newly installed transmission force main in preparation for making the transition from the current sewage treatment plant, pictured above, to the pipeline through Gloucester to York County. Mathews County administrator Steve Whiteway said he expects the cutover to occur within the next month, but the treatment plant will remain in place throughout the testing phase and for a short time afterward as backup until "the new system is working without glitches." HRSD has agreed to dismantle the plant within a reasonable time, said Whiteway, adding that "they’ve been very good to work with." Photo by Elsa Cooke Verbyla.
