Several highway improvement projects planned in Mathews

Several highway projects are being planned in Mathews County to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

The second phase of the Mathews Main Street Enhancement Project is already in the works, with construction possibly to begin as soon as 2026, said Mathews County Planning and Zoning Director James Knighton, who outlined the projects to the Mathews Board of Supervisors during the December meeting.

The project will include pedestrian safety and accessibility, as well as sidewalk, drainage and aesthetic improvements to Main Street from Hyco Corner to the spot in front of Food Lion where the first phase of the project ended. That phase was completed in late 2017.

Knighton said a request for proposals the county issued for the design of the Main Street project had received two responses—one from VHB (Vanasse Hangen Brustlin) of Williamsburg, the company that designed the first phase, and the other from Bowman of Richmond, but no selection had been made as of Monday.
