Services announced by local churches

Services and other activities in churches this week include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, will hold Sunday services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. with the sermon by Natalie Johnson. Sunday school will continue at 9:30 with the series on “Doubts.”

Antioch Baptist

The Rev. Sean Cummings of Friendship Baptist Church, Newport News, will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Antioch Baptist Church, Susan. The service will be livestreamed on Facebook at weareantioch1869.

Bible study and prayer meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Bellamy United Methodist

Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will celebrate the fifth Sunday of Easter at the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. services. Nursery (for birth to 3-year-olds) will be available at the 10:30 worship. At 9:20 a.m., Pastor Ed Walker will continue his four-week informational study of the United Methodist General Conference to be held soon in Charlotte, N.C. The Youth Group will meet at 5 p.m. with dinner provided.

The Gloucester Women’s Bible Study will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Bethany United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Paul Song of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “Relationship Inventory.” Nursery for infants to 3-year-olds will be available beginning at 9:40.

Bethel Baptist

The Rev. James L. Harris of Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester, will preach at noon Sunday for the in-person service. Sunday school will start at 10 o’clock virtually.

The Wednesday prayer session will begin at 6:30 p.m., preceding the virtual Bible study period.

Mr. Harris and friends will visit Riverside Convalescent Center in Saluda on Thursday, May 2 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. They will be singing and the Rev. Mr. Harris will share a message with the residents.

Bethel Church of Mathews

Kenneth Whitehead will be the guest speaker at the 9:50 a.m. Sunday service in Bethel Church of Mathews at Onemo. Sunday school will follow at 11.

The Women’s Ministry and Missions will meet at Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

A Mother’s Day bulletin honoring and memorializing special women in our lives will be sponsored by the Women’s Ministry and Missions. The deadline to turn in names is May 5.

The mission project through the end of May is collecting of baby diapers and wipes and non-perishable items for Hands Across Mathews.

Beulah Church of New Point

The Rev. Coleman Tyler of Mathews, will preach at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Beulah Church of New Point.

Church of the Living Word

The sermon title of Pastor Select McKinley A. Miller at 10 a.m. Sunday in Church of the Living Word, Hayes, will be “Building Trust.”

The topic at the 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in-person Bible study will be “Life Lessons.”

Ebenezer Baptist

The Men’s Chorus of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, will celebrate its 27th anniversary at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants in the program will include Gloucester-Mathews Men’s Chorus, Hunter Owens, Men’s Chorus of Emmaus Baptist Church, Tyrone Hudgins and James Redmond. Deacon Carrol Jackson will be the master of ceremonies.

First Baptist, Ordinary

The sermon title of Pastor Ward Warren of First Baptist Church, Ordinary, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Fear: The Enemy of Faith.” Church school begins at 9 o’clock.

A yard sale and barbecue sale will be held from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tables are available for $15 (you provide). Barbecue combos will be $7 and sandwiches, $5. For more information, contact First Lady Warren at 804-642-6655.

First Morning Star Baptist

The sermon title of the Rev. Wil Early, associate pastor of First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Be Prepared.” The Combined Choir, led by Leander Myers, will sing. The worship service will be in-person, broadcast by teleconference, 804-256-2475.

Gloucester Point Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Dillon Evans of Gloucester Point Baptist Church will begin a new series, “I Wish Someone Told Me,” at 11 a.m. Sunday. His sermon title will be “Sharing My Faith.”

Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist

The Youth Department of Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist will sponsor a trip to see “Daniel” at the Sight and Sound Theater in Pennsylvania on Aug. 23-24. If interested, contact GURA Youth Advisor Brenda Davis at 804-693-2178. The deadline is Sunday.

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of Pastor Dorothy Hood of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “Come, All Who Would Enter.”

Kingston Episcopal Parish

Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will observe the fifth Sunday of Easter with Holy Eucharist Rite I at 8 a.m. at Christ Church on Williams Wharf Road and Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10:30 a.m. at Kingston Chapel at the parish house on Main Street.

Lay Visitors will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in the library. Classes studying “Ladder to the Light” will be held at 1 p.m. Monday and 7 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday noon Eucharist/Healing service takes place at the parish house.

The sermon title of the Rev. Calvin Griffin of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Gloucester, at the 9 a.m. Sunday service will be “What Type of Branch are We?”

New Mount Zion Baptist

New Mount Zion Baptist Church, Gloucester, will celebrate Women’s Day at 11 a.m. Sunday. The theme will be “Women Sharing the Love of Christ” and the guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Donna Freeman. This year’s color will be red.

New Point Friends

The sermon title of Pastor Thomas Bunting of New Point Friends Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “Lights in the Darkness.”

Newington Baptist

Pastor Chris Grella of Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, continues his message series on “The Questions of Jonah” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The in-person service will also be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page and YouTube. A nursery, for infants and toddlers, will be available.
Wednesday night activities include COR3 Youth, KidzLife, and adult Bible study at 6:30.

Olive Branch Global Methodist

Olive Branch Global Methodist Church, Gloucester, will have Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school will follow at 10:30.

Salem Community

Salem Community Church, Gloucester, will hold worship at 11 a.m. Sunday. Adult Bible study will begin at 10.

Game Night will held at 6 o’clock tonight.

The Craft Workshop will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday. Come join in creating new creations as we put to work the motto “Reduce, ReUse, and Rejoice,” according to a release.

Shepherdsville Baptist

Shepherdsville Baptist Church, Gloucester, will hold a Missionary Talent Show and Hat Extravaganza at 1 p.m. Saturday. Everyone is asked to wear their most stylish, unique, creative or most outlandish hat for the event, a release said. Light refreshments will follow.

The sermon title of Pastor Douglas Riley at the 11 a.m. Sunday in-person service will be “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

Singleton United Methodist

Monday Bible study, “When God Whispers your Name,” will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday night Bible study at 7 o’clock will discuss a new book, “Invitation to the New Testament.”

Spring Hill Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Ross Davis of Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “God Wants You.”

The First United Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor E. Randolph Graham of The First United Baptist Church, White Marsh, for the 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “Pathways to Spiritual Understanding: The Importance of Daily Devotion.” Praise and worship will begin at 10:45. Service will be streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The Kingdom Church Ministries International

The Kingdom Church Ministries International family invites everyone to join in the 10 a.m. Sunday service at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center.

Union Baptist

Pastor Jared Berry of Union Baptist Church, Hayes, will preach at 11 a.m. Sunday. Choir practice will be at 5 p.m.

Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock

Diana Jamison will speak on “Happy 25th Birthday UUFR!” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock, White Stone.

Westville Baptist

The sermon title of Paul Gibson of Mobjack at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service in Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, will be “Believe.”

On Wednesday, Bible study will be held at 3 p.m. The Ministry and Missions of Bethel Church will join Westville at 7 p.m.

Zion Hill Baptist

Zion Hill Baptist Church, Gloucester, will have in-person worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday. Pastor Eugene Comithier II will preach and the Male Chorus will sing. In-person Sunday school will be held at 9:45. The Sunday School Department will celebrate its 143rd anniversary at 3 p.m. They will have various speakers speaking on the topic “Faith.” The Life Abundantly Ministries Choir of Newport News and God’s Angels of Gloucester will sing.
