Services announced by local churches

Special services and other activities in churches this week include the following:

Abingdon Episcopal

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, will hold Sunday Holy Eucharist in- person at 7:45 a.m. Holy Eucharist will also be held at 11 o’clock, in-person and livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube. To receive a bulletin of the order of service, email the church at admin@abingdonchurch.org

A book discussion on “Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory” will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday via Zoom. Contact the office for more information.

Apostles Lutheran

For the second Sunday of Easter, Apostles Lutheran Church, Gloucester, will worship with the Virginia Synod (via Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo) to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, as a synod and highlight the Virginia Synod’s companion relationship with the New Guinea Islands District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Papua New Guinea. The preacher will be the Rev. Kelly Bayer Derrick, Assistant to the Bishop. There will be no regular Zoom service; information about the service will be available at www.apostles-elca.org/events.

The book study of “Inspired” will continue at 7 o’clock tonight via Zoom.

Bellamy United Methodist

Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, will offer in-person worship at 10 a.m. Sunday in the sanctuary. Safety protocols will be in place and masks are required while in the church. Child care is available for the service in the nursery for children who are not older than two years of age. For information about attending worship services, call the church office at 804-694-5142.

Bethany United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Mike Derflinger of Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “When God Breathes on You.” Masks, touchless temperature, and social distancing are in effect. Worship can also be done on the YouTube Channel and church website www.bethanyumc-gp.org.

Bethel Baptist

Bethel Baptist Church, Gloucester, will celebrate its annual Men’s Day service on Sunday. The Rev. Bernard Chaney, former pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church, will deliver the message at noon. Sunday school will start at 10 a.m. using the same access information. Bible study is held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Bethel United Methodist

The Bible study groups, “The Faith-in-Action Preacher,” of Bethel United Methodist Church, Onemo, will meet at 10:05 a.m. Sunday. At 10:50, the worship service will begin. All health guidelines of face coverings, social distancing and health forms apply.

Beulah United Methodist

Central United Methodist

Central United Methodist Church, Mathews, will hold its service at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. The sermon title from of the Rev. John Choi, pastor, will be “Faith is Life.” Those attending are asked to wear face coverings and social distancing is observed. The service will be streamed live on the church’s YouTube channel, which can be accessed through the church’s homepage at www.centralumcmathews.org.

Church of the Living Word

The sermon title of Lead Pastor Melvin Epps of Church of the Living Word, Hayes, at the 10 a.m. Sunday service will be “God is Great.”

The Gospel of Mark will be the topic for the 6 p.m. Wednesday Bible study via Zoom.

Emmanuel United Methodist

Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Bohannon, will hold an in-person worship service on Sunday at 11 a.m. The sermon title of Pastor Jennifer Mercer sermon will be “Blessed Doubt.” All attending must wear face coverings, with social distancing observed. A short health form needs to be filled out prior to the service or at the door.

First Baptist, Mathews

First Baptist Church, Mathews, invites everyone to join them online “live from the sanctuary” on Sundays. Bring God’s House to your house, a release said.

Thursday night Bible study is held live on Facebook at 7:30.

First Baptist, Ordinary

The sermon title of Pastor Ward Warren of First Baptist Church, Ordinary, at the 11 a.m. Sunday Facebook service will be “A True Friend.” Sunday school will precede the service at 9. Both services will be in-person and on Zoom. For dial-in info, call Deacon Albert Ali at 804-642-3109.

Gloucester Point Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Bud Goode of Gloucester Point Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday will be “No More Fleece.” The in-person Sunday school classes will begin at 9:45. Adults meet in the sanctuary and children in their classes. Face coverings will be required of everyone five years old and older while in the church building.

Grace Covenant Presbyterian

The sermon title of Assistant Pastor Kathryn Leech of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “Your Gifts for His Glory: The Parable of the Talents.” The service will be held online and in person.
Groves Memorial Presbyterian

The sermon title of the Rev. Michael Condrey of Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church, Glass, at 10 a.m. Sunday will be “Believe it or Not.” The Session will meet at 9 o’clock.

Gwynn’s Island Baptist

Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church will hold a drive-in service Sunday at 10 a.m. around the gazebo across from the church. Parking will begin at 9:30. The sermon title of Dr. Ed Jordan, pastor, will be “Don’t Forget Your Brain!” Autumn Jenkins and Richard Callis will provide special music.

Kingston Episcopal Parish

In addition to online services, Kingston Episcopal Parish, Mathews, will have outdoor worship with Rite I Spiritual Communion at Christ Church on Williams Wharf Road at 10 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting. Bring chairs, wear masks and socially distance. Children’s Sunday school is held every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Call 804-725-9893 for login instructions. Coffee hour will be held via Zoom at 11:30 a.m.

The Wabingston Clergy Klatch Bible study is held every Saturday morning, also on Facebook and YouTube. The ID and passcode for all online services can be obtained from the church office at 804-725-2175. The next Bible class will begin in May.

LightHouse

LightHouse Church, Ordinary, will have both the 8 (at-risk individuals) and 10 a.m. (family friendly) Sunday services. Face masks required for both services. Kids Church is also held at 10 in the Kids Club building. Use the online Church Center app to check children in.

Mathews Baptist

Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, will hold in-person services on Sunday: contemporary at 9 a.m. (also on online) and traditional at 11 a.m. (also on CD upon request). The sermon title of the Rev. Brian Kramer, pastor, will be “Rock Restoration.”

Mathews Chapel United Methodist

The sermon title of Pastor Brett Isernhagen of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek, at the 11 a.m. Sunday in-person service will be “You are my Witnesses.”

New Point Friends

The sermon title of the Rev. Thomas Bunting, pastor of New Point Friends Church, at its 11 a.m. Sunday service will be “We Have Four Witnesses.”

Newington Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor Mike Gray of Newington Baptist Church, Gloucester, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will be “Enriching Grace.” The service will also be streamed live at 10:30 on Newington’s Facebook. Kids Worship, for children age four years through the fifth grade, will also be available during the adult service; nursery will be open for infants and toddlers.

Wednesday evening activities for children, K-12 begin at 6:30. Pastor Gray will lead a new study, “Acts: Barrier Breaking Faith.”

Masks are required and social distancing is observed at all events.

The Clothes Closet will distribute clothes to anyone in need from 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays, April 17 and 24.

The sermon title of the Rev. Ronald Gayle on revgayle.com will be “I Don’t Wanna Go.” A new sermon is posted every Sunday. All previous sermons can be viewed anytime.

Singleton United Methodist

Singleton United Methodist Church, Ware Neck, will have in-person worship with face mask and social distancing, and Zoom worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday. Spring Hill Baptist

The sermon title at the 11 a.m. Sunday service in Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, will be “The Meaning of the Empty Tomb.” The empty tomb means that the gospel is complete and provides the way of salvation and new life. It means Jesus is coming again, a release said.

St. Matthew United Methodist

St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Peary, will have an in-church worship service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Health guidelines of face covering, social distancing and health forms apply.

St. Paul United Methodist

The First United Baptist

The sermon title of Pastor E. Randolph Graham of the First United Baptist Church, White Marsh, for the 10 a.m. Sunday service will be “Nail Prints Confirm.” Holy Communion will be observed. The service will be drive-up, simulcasted and streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live.

Westville Baptist

The sermon title of the Rev. Bob Huff of Westville Baptist Church, Mathews, at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service will be “I Stand at the Door.” A fellowship luncheon (lasagna) will follow the service.

A quarterly business meeting will be held at 4 p.m.

The church is collecting toiletries for the Mathews Social Services Department.

Zion Hill Baptist

Zion Hill Baptist Church, Gloucester, will celebrate the third pastoral anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. Eugene F. Comithier II on Sunday. “Praise on the Pavilion” will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the church and will feature the Young Silverleaf Singers, God’s Angels, and the Mighty Echoes of Joy, all of Gloucester.

This will be a drive-up service, but you can bring your lawn chair and sit outside. All COVID protocols are to be followed (social distancing, mask-wearing, hand-washing, etc.).

Plans are being made for the service to be live streamed on the church Facebook page as well as The Mighty Echoes of Joy Facebook page.

Zion Poplars Baptist

The Rev. Vincent Haley, associate minister, will render the message at 11 a.m. Sunday in Zion Poplars Baptist Church, Gloucester. Wednesday Bible study will also be led by Mr. Haley at 7 p.m. Conference call number for both services is 1-617-769-8975.
